Over 1,500 GPs to gather at the Valencia Conference Centre

Congress

The Valencia conference venue is to host the 25th National General and Family Medicine Congress from 31st May to 2nd June 2018, bringing together over 1,500 healthcare professionals

After calling in at Corunna, Granada and San Sebastian, Valencia is to host the silver jubilee of the General and Family Medicine Congress which also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Spanish Society of General and Family Medicine Practitioners (SEMG in its Spanish acronym). Today, the SEMG has consolidated its role in primary healthcare, and as organising committee Chair María Asunción Iturralde says, these 25 years since its first congress mark the end of one era and the start of a new period of further development.

This time round, the event’s theme is “25 Years of Values, Science and Skills” in reference to the SEMG’s ethical and professional principles which include patient care, scientific progress, and quality of care. The exciting scientific programme the organisers have drawn up features the latest healthcare breakthroughs which will be addressed from a practical point of view and are designed to improve the quality of care in health centres. However, in addition to essentially clinical issues, the congress will also be looking at the challenges the sector faces in the area of family violence, using new technology and bioethics. These contents will additionally be examined from the social and community action standpoint which is so crucial in these healthcare professionals’ everyday practise.

The pioneering initiatives at the meeting include a call for 250 grants to Family and Community Medicine residents to encourage research in these specialists’ initial years of training along with school activities to tell young people about the risk factors in smoking coinciding with World No Tobacco Day on 31st May.
